Looking Back at the Watercooler's 2016

As 2016 comes to a close, we’re going to take a look back the the past year at Niagara’s Watercooler. Sure, we have not been around for the full year, but we have been around for most of it. And if you know us, you know that we have a lot to say...all the time. In fact, some people may say we talk too much. Well, in defiance of those people, and in support of all our wonderful readers, we’re going to go ahead a talk about our year anyway.

The Death of 2016 . . . or is it?

Many of us cannot wait for the violent and painful death of the year known as 2016. For some of us, this year will remain permanently etched in our psyche for one reason or another. For the world, this was the year that fate took our musical innovators and left us with a clown ready to assume the most important political office in the world. This was not a good year.

It's a Small World After All

It’s a small world after all. That’s not just a lyric to a Disney song. In many cases, it’s quite literally true. Take, for example, what happened to me Thursday afternoon. I was innocently trolling Facebook when I saw a post in one of the fitness groups that I belong to. A map was posted that showed the route of where one of the other members was talking a walk with his dog. I recognized the area and asked where exactly he was.

These Old Walkin' Shoes: Let it Snow, Let it Snow

This week’s “Walkin’ Shoes” is kind of a hybrid between “Walkin’ Shoes” and “Reminscing.” Since it is now cold outside and there is ice and snow on the sidewalks, I have not been able to keep my morning walk routine going. I don’t like the cold, and I don’t like slipping. Instead, when I was driving into work I had some thoughts roll through my head as I looked at the bit of snow we got this morning.

The Ticketmaster Conundrum

As many of you have probably figured out, I am a huge fan of music, especially live music. I go to concerts all the time, although since the kids have been born, that number has dropped drastically. In my concert-going career from age 13 until now, I’ve probably gone to over 500 concerts. Until the last decade, I kept all my stubs in a drawer. With e-tickets and print at home options, that old tradition of saving stubs has gone by the wayside.

For the Love of Books, Books, and More Books

For those of you who love to read my book reviews and look forward to them each Tuesday, I promise you they will be back next week. The new year will bring some changes to the Watercooler. Some will be gradual, while others will be much more drastic. Please give us a chance to show off the new Watercooler in 2017. Expect to see much more George Root in the new year -- even if I have to continuously post photos of him. In the meantime, I want to talk about the Lockport Library and my reading habits.

Twenty-Five Years, A New Engagement, and a Fantastic Future

Today marks 25 years since Wendy and I started officially dating. December 26, 1991. Not only was it her brother, Brian’s, birthday, it was the day she decided that she wanted to be exclusive with me. It has been, without a doubt, the finest twenty-five years of my life so far. Here’s to many, many more years for us.

From Niagara's Watercooler to All Of You

From Wendy, Craig, George, and Howie, we all wish you a very Merry Christmas.

As part of a new holiday tradition that we at the Cooler would like to continue for many years to come, we present you with the full text of "A Visit from St. Nicholas." Better known as "Twas the Night Before Christmas," it was first published anonymously in 1823. It has been commonly attributed to Clement Clarke Moore, after he claimed authorship in 1837. Members of the Livingston family believe that their relative, Henry Livingston, Jr., penned the poem. In any case, the poem has long been a classic Christmas tradition. In it's entirety, ready to be read to your children, is that famous work:

I Wish It was Christmas Today

The domain of Christmas and the holidays, at least with regard to those of us at Niagara's Watercooler, belongs to George Root and Howie Balaban. They live for the holiday season, especially George. Me? Not so much. I far prefer Independence Day as my holiday of choice over Christmas. Think about it. It's warm, sunny, and easy to hang outside with some beers and friends. December in Western New York is cold.

And To All A Good Night...

Christmas has always been a very important day to me. I know we are supposed to re-start our internal clocks on January 1, but I always looked at Christmas Day as the end of the year. Once Christmas Day was over, everything went back to square one and we started all over again. It is a cleansing, and it always feels good.

On the Homefront: Old Traditions, New Traditions & Traditional Values

Several years ago my wife and I awoke to an elf in our house. He wore red, with some white mixed into the outfit.
Somehow, some way, he left right after Christmas.
He was contracted out to keep an eye on our home thanks to my brother-in-law and his fiance.

Another Christmas Song Faces Backlash

With less than a week to go until Christmas, another holiday song has found itself in the crosshairs of controversy. Last week, “Baby, It’s Cold Outside” was updated with new lyrics after a lengthy discussion on whether the song promoted sexual assault. This time, it is “Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer” that is getting extra scrutiny.

Lockport Sweeps Showcase Weekend With 7-1 Victory Over Helena

Maybe the Lockport Express just needed a change of scenery. Maybe they just needed a few games to gel under new/old coach, Frank Vecchio. At any rate, the Express swept the NA3HL Showcase Weekend in Blaine, Minnesota. They completed the weekend with a 7-1 victory over the Helena Bighorns. They have now won 4 out of their last 5 games.

REMINISCING: Baby You Can Drive My Car

It was just my birthday a week and a half ago. Yes, I am celebrating my 18th birthday for the 25th time. For all you non-mathletes out there, I just turned 43. When I was 18, 43 sure seemed like it was a long way away and very old. Now that I’m here, I realize that it’s not. In fact, most of the time, I feel like I’m still 18 in many ways. My mind anyway. My body may have different ideas. Like Toby says, “I ain’t as good as I once was, but I’m as good once as I ever was.”

Lockport Wins 4-3 Over College Station

The Lockport Express continued their new winning ways, taking a close game, 4-3, against the College Station Spirit in Day Two action of the NA3HL Showcase in Blaine, Minnesota. The Express have now won 3 out of their last 4 games after a lengthy winless streak.

A Rogue Father-Daughter Evening

Normally, I leave the parenting articles to Howie Balaban. However, it is my blog and I can write whatever I want (sorry Howie!). Plus, Howie is late (I know -- shocking!) with this week’s article, so I decided to write up a quick article about parenting.

Express Open Showcase With 5-2 Victory

The Lockport Express arrived in Blaine, Minnesota for the NA3HL Showcase ready for action, and they walked away from Game 1 with a 5-2 victory over the Glacier Nationals. The Express will play two more games this weekend before taking some time off for the holidays.

Catching Up With the Lockport Express -- Showcase Edition

The Lockport Express finally broke the long winless streak with a 4-1 victory over the visiting Jersey Shore Wildcats last Saturday evening. While the Express did fall to the Wildcats 6-3 Sunday afternoon, they showed that this team can win games, and will win games. The effort during both games was exceptional.

Wildcats Derail Express 6-3

The Jersey Shore Wildcats played a better game Sunday than they did Saturday night, and the Lockport Express continued the same strong presence that they displayed Saturday night. In the end, Jersey Shore dropped the Express 6-3 Sunday afternoon at Cornerstone Ice Arena. Lockport outshot Jersey Shore 47-36.

Lockport Tames Wildcats 4-1

The long drought is over for the Lockport Express as they took down the visiting Jersey Shore Wildcats 4-1 in a game Saturday evening at the Cornerstone Ice Arena. Lockport dominated play from the opening faceoff, outshooting the WIldcats throughout the entirety of the game. “It was a full team effort,” said head coach, Frank Vecchio.

Godspeed, John Glenn

I just read the news this morning that John Glenn was in the hospital for an undisclosed illness, but that it was not cancer despite being admitted to a cancer hospital. I think the biggest surprise for me was that John Glenn was 95. Somehow, these heroes from the golden age of spaceflight never seem to age in our minds beyond the black and white file footage shown on anniversaries or other significant dates.

Book Reviews on Temporary Hiatus

As many of my followers may have noticed recently, the number of book reviews being posted has dropped over the past three months. Sometimes, life gets in the way, and it's hard to keep reading all those books all the time. With the upcoming craziness that is associated with the holidays, it's even harder to not only read the books, but take the time to sit down and write a review.

Catching Up With the Lockport Express Week 13

The Lockport Express are back at Cornerstone Ice Arena for a pair a games this weekend before they head out to Blaine, Minnesota for the holiday showcase. The Express will face off against the Jersey Shore Wildcats Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. Saturday’s game time is 8:00pm, and Sunday’s match will get underway at 2:00pm.

Scrooge Hits the Palace Stage Again

It’s a Lockport tradition that has been thirteen years in the making. And if you missed “Scrooge” this past weekend, you have no one but yourself to blame. You’ve had ample opportunity. If you haven’t seen the show for a few years, then this year, you missed something just a little bit different from the previous shows.

Southern Tier Drops Lockport 4-3

The woes for the win column for the Lockport Express continued in action Friday evening against the Southern Tier Xpress. Lockport dropped the decision 4-3 at the Cornerstone Ice Arena. It was the only game of the weekend for the Express. The streak now stands at 17.

On the Homefront Vol. 13: Decorations a Reminder of Years Past

The oldest child in my house is a nonexistent teenager who only shows his face this time of year. It took him a year or two of going all out around the holidays to learn the hard way that less, sometimes, is more.
I am talking about my "inner" child, who is still relatively young when it comes to decorating the house this time of year.

These Old Walkin' Shoes: Teach Your Children

The Age of Electronics has ruined my kids. I’m no Luddite, but sometimes the instant access of nearly everything has changed the way kids see the world today. It has completely changed the way they watch TV, and the way they play some games. Sometimes, it really drives me crazy.

Get Over It

There is no phrase more detrimental to creating a sense of unity between two opposing sides than "get over it." While the GOP whined and wailed for eight years, Democratic supporters insisted that the Republicans get over it and get on with the business of helping the country. The result? The country is more divided than ever, and it is not completely the fault of the Democratic president.

Catching Up With the Lockport Express Week 12

The Lockport Express spent the last weekend at home with family members for the holiday, but they return to action Friday evening at the Cornerstone Ice Arena against the Southern Tier Xpress. Game time is at 8pm. It will be the lone game of the weekend for the Express.

Old Fort Niagara Castle By Candlelight December 3rd & 10th

On Saturdays, December 3 & 10, Old Fort Niagara will offer guests a unique historical experience in a setting untouched by consumerism but enhanced by natural elements, like evergreen boughs and pinecones and accented with ribbons and handmade ornaments, courtesy of the Youngstown Garden Club. Candles and lanterns will illuminate outdoor walkways and the rooms of the 1726 French Castle, the oldest building on the Great Lakes.

Scrooge Ready to Roll This Weekend

Yes, with all the crazy winter weather we’ve had lately, what could be more appropriate than Lockport’s traditional holiday musical? That’s right, Scrooge will be taking the stage at the Historic Lockport Palace Theatre this weekend, December 2-4. If you haven’t seen it in any of the last thirteen years, maybe the fourteenth time's the charm.

On the Road Again With the Lockport Express

There were no Lockport Express games this past weekend, but we did have Hockey Day in Lockport. Still, that’s not enough hockey for this guy. I love hockey so much that I accompanied the Express on their recent road trip to play against the Syracuse Stampede. Despite the name, the Stampede home games are played at Morrisville.

Lockport Alumni Win Both Games at Hockey Day in Lockport

Saturday was the second annual Hockey Day in Lockport at the Cornerstone Ice Arena in downtown Lockport. It was a full day of hockey-related activities, including a sled hockey game, two alumni games, both Lockport junior varsity and varsity games, and an open skate. Also included were raffles and a NHL roundtable featuring former Sabres, Jim Lorentz and Derek Smith.

You’re probably hanging with your families and not reading this until late on Black Friday, after you’ve rested a bit after shopping for all those “deals” that you can’t live without. Winter Storms Wreak Havoc on Production

With the recent snow storm across Central New York, and the threat of more snow in the western New York area, focus has not only been on the reports of the weathermen making the storm calls, but it has also been on those in the mercantile business. Every winter storm, every hurricane forecast, and almost every summer rain shower sends certain manufacturers into frenzy as they attempt to keep up with customer demand.

The Syracuse Stampede delivered another loss to the Lockport Express Sunday afternoon. The 6-4 loss dropped the Express to 3-16 on the season. These Old Walkin' Shoes: I Got Stars in My Beard

Well, it’s that time of year again. You guessed it -- it’s No-Shave November. In the spirit of the occasion, I’ve decided to grow my own beard. As my friend, Howie Balaban, says, “You’ve been growing that thing since August, and it’s still not filling in.” It hasn’t been quite that long, but it does take an extraordinarily long time for me to grow a beard -- if you could call it a beard, that is.

Leon Russell: A Personal Memory and Tribute

I woke up to the news that Leon Russell died. He was 74 years old. There may be a lot of people who really have no idea who I’m talking about, but Russell was an icon in the music world. When you hear Joe Cocker belting out “Delta Lady” on the radio, or “Shine a Light” by the Rolling Stones, you’re hearing the mastery of Leon Russell.

REMINISCING: My Civic Duty

I must start off with my sincerest apologies. I have been very lax in my writing lately. This has been the longest spell of writer’s block that I’ve ever had. Nothing really has broken through. Until now. Last Tuesday’s election broke open the flood gates, so to speak. Since then, I have been writing notes, waiting for the time to be able to sit down and get them into some sort of printable order.

Lockport’s own Santa Claus, also known as Chris Parada, welcomes about 10,000 visitors a year to Santa’s Christmas Cottage. Chris and his father built the Christmas Cottage using their own funds so Santa would have a home base where thousands of children can visit, tell Santa all about Christmas, and have their photos taken free of charge. Each year, Santa also visits the homes of needy families to make sure the kids have a gift to open on Christmas Day. Chris explains, “For years I wanted to have a special place where children could come visit Santa, drop off a letter in the North Pole Mailbox and be introduced to history that took place many years ago. I also wanted to continue the family tradition that has been such a big part of our lives.”

Lockport’s Historic Palace Theater, Inc., is a non-profit community-based organization dedicated to maintaining the historic and architectural integrity of this magnificent 91-year-old Western New York landmark. Each year the venue hosts live plays, musicals, community events, concerts, and popular movies for tens of thousands of patrons.

The Chicago Authority Celebrates the Music of Chicago the Band

On the Homefront: Cherishing Saved Time

I wanted to write about Halloween last weekend. I didn't.
I wanted to throw in a column about hypocrisy in the media and society to give you a feel for me the person, instead of me the dad. I didn't do that either.
It's been a busy time. Everyone is busy, I understand. And sometimes there just aren't things interesting enough to write about.

REMINISCING: Trick or Treat

It’s Halloween and that means costumes. Or does it? All the latest rage is to make Halloween the “Next Big Holiday” but there have been less and less kids out for trick-or-treating. Instead the focus seems to be on parties rather than letting the kids go out into the neighborhood. I’m torn on that, seeing both sides of the issue. However, I’d rather talk about my Halloween adventures. Well. mostly.

Catching Up With the Lockport Express - Week 8

Arguably one of America’s greatest writers, Mark Twain has had plenty written about him, even a century after his death. This includes the mammoth three-volume autobiography just recently completed. Even through decades of controversy, our infatuation with Twain and his legacy continues to grow. With Twain’s End, Lynn Cullen attempts to give us a quick glimpse into the final years of Samuel Clemens and his alter ego, Twain.

I had to think and rethink as to whether I was going to write this review. While I enjoy reading the books in the “Women’s Murder Club,” I have a hard time reconciling the fact that James Patterson gets all the credit for other people’s work. Sure, he is the originator of the idea and gets final veto power on what has been written, but I believe credit is due to the smaller names on the front cover. It is for them that I decided to write this review.

REMINISCING: Lock Stock and Barrel

Yes, I know that this week’s Reminiscing is just a tad bit late, but there have been events in the family life which have taken precedence over sitting down to write an article. Still, I will take a few moments and get something out for all my loyal readers.

I'm talking about the lights on the lake. If you live near the lake, you might already know what I'm about to tell you.

The regularly scheduled games for the Lockport Express for Saturday, October 15, and Sunday, October 16, against the East Coast Minutemen have been postponed until February 25 and 26 at the Essex Sports Center in Massachusetts. An issue with the rink caused the delay.

On the Homefront: Nature vs Nurture

After a week off, I've returned with a piece of writing that deals with the debate many of us learned about in high school or college. That is, are people born a certain way, or are they taught to be a certain way?
Before you get excited, thinking I'm going to be talking about ongoing political talking points like whether a man can be with a man or a woman a woman, I'll stop you. This is not that type of column. Frankly, who people choose to associate with in their private time is none of my business.

These Old Walkin' Shoes: Mystery Train

Last night I was looking at Google Maps of the area around my grandmother's house in Lyndonville. In satellite view, I flew over the small Western New York Village, recognizing places I once played during the summers spent with my grandmother. As I moved the scene around town, I realized that the old Hojack Railroad Bridge was gone.

Literally the Best Reviews: The Room With the Second-Best View

The Room With the Second-Best View -- Virginia Smith
Harvest House Publishers
224 Pages

I have reviewed other books in the Goose Creek B&B series. While these are listed under “Inspirational” on the bookshelves at the Lockport Library, it is not the typical inspirational story that you find on those shelves. They are inspirational in that these books detail the best of what it means to be a husband, wife, neighbor, and friend.

Catching Up With the Lockport Express: Week 6

The Lockport Express head back out on the road after a quick, one game homestand and a six game losing streak. This weekend they are off to the Boston, Massachusetts area to take on the East Coast Minutemen. The Express are hoping to right the train and grab a couple wins before returning home to face the powerhouse tandem of the Binghamton Junior Senators and the Jersey Shore Wildcats.

Shea's Buffalo Presents "Finding Neverland"

It sure seems that Wendy and I spend a lot of date nights at the theater. Mostly we find ourselves at the Palace in Lockport, but this time was just a little bit different. Our anniversary was last week, and we always celebrate during Columbus Day weekend. Our schedules just work better that way. So, as a special date night for our anniversary, we got tickets to see “Finding Neverland” at Shea’s in Buffalo.

REMINISCING: Wedding Bells & Anniversaries

Welcome to a special edition of “Reminiscing.” Why special, you may ask? Well, Tuesday October 4th, was my wedding anniversary. After 19 years being married to Wendy, she deserves a column that talks about how great she is. And truly she’s really great. She’s put up with me for not only the last 19 years of marriage but an additional six years of dating. Yes, you mathletes have figured that out correctly. Wendy and I have been together for 25 years. It’s kind of our silver anniversary tour.

Express Derailed By Binghamton

Binghamton Junior Senators continued to dominate the Northeast Division with a resounding 7-1 win over the visiting Lockport Express Saturday evening. After starting the season with three consecutive wins, the Express have dropped the last three games, and have only been able to tally 2 goals in that time.

These Old Walkin' Shoes: Set Up Like a Bowling Pin

I promised this past Sunday that today’s article might have a little bit something extra. That little extra is Howie Balaban. Who doesn’t love Howie? If you’ve followed us from the old Shenanigans days, you know how much we love Howie. Without even trying, he becomes the butt of his own jokes. Just ask him some time about Girl Scout Cookies in Iowa. Well, anyway, I think this time the joke’s on me.

Catching Up With the Lockport Express: Week 4

The Lockport Express returned after a long weekend in New Jersey with two blemishes on their record. The Jersey Shore Wildcats were able to reverse the tables on visiting Lockport with a pair of wins. The wins were the first of the season for the defending champions, and the losses were the first for Lockport. This upcoming weekend will be no easier for the Express as they travel to take on the division-leading Binghamton Junior Senators.

Literally the Best Reviews: The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper

The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper -- Phaedra Patrick
MIRA Publishers

Sometimes there are books that I grab from the shelves at the Lockport Library simply on a whim. Sometimes, there are really good books with which I’m glad I took a chance. Rarely, those books are terrible. Even more rarely, those books make such an impression that I automatically consider them one of my favorite books of the year. The Curious Charms of Arthur Pepper  by Phaedra Patrick is the rarest of the rare in that I put in the Top 5 running for favorite books of the year.

Dictionary to Change Some Definitions

Editors at Mirriam-Webster and Oxford English Dictionary have reached a new agreement on some of the words listed in their pages for the 2017 update. This latest business is an addendum to the early session that oversaw the addition of “biatch,” “YOLO,” and “moobs,” and is an attempt to streamline the English language in a digital world.

Jersey Shore Hand Lockport Second Loss 3-1

The Lockport Express left the Atlantic shores of New Jersey with a pair of losses. The Wildcats delivered a second consecutive loss to the visiting Express Saturday evening, 3-1. The Express returns to Lockport 3-2 on the season, ready to take on division-leading Binghamton Junior Senators at the Ice House Sports Complex Saturday and Sunday.

REMINISCING: A Writing Life

If any of you have been paying attention, you’ve noticed that the updates on Niagara’s Watercooler have been a little bit more intermittent than normal. That’s completely my fault. Sometimes life happens, and sometimes I just don’t have “it.” By “it” I mean those moments when I sit down to the computer to write and the ideas just come. This block happens once in awhile but it always ends with a flourish of extra writing.

On the Homefront: (One of) The Most Wonderful Times of the Year

Before we get into this week's edition of my stay-at-home adventures, a quick apology for my absence on this site last week. I was in fact not at home. A trip planned months ago finally came to fruition, and I was fortunate enough to travel to Toronto with my brother, father, uncle, and cousin to see the first game of the World Cup of Hockey. Team USA lost (it was not a good tournament for the Americans) but aside from the game's result, the weekend was excellent.

Express Blanked in Jersey, 5-0

The Lockport Express visited Jersey Shore with high hopes on their young season. They headed to the Garden State riding a 3-game winning streak to meet the defending champions who were reeling after a pair of losses to open the season. Instead, it was Lockport who was reeling after a 5-0 drubbing Friday night.

Theater Review: Mark Twain Live!

It was date night again for Wendy and I at the Historic Palace Theater in Lockport. Saturday night was the kickoff for the newest season, and being season ticket holders for the third year, we were in attendance. The show was a one-man show starring Mike Randall as Mark Twain.

Express Wins in Shootout 7-6

The Lockport Express capped off a home and home series with the Roc City Royals with a 7-6 shootout victory at the Lakeshore Arena in Rochester. Four different Express players scored during the contest.

REMINISCING: Lockport the Movie

This week’s Reminiscing came about by total fluke, and only because I was cleaning out my library. For those of you who know me, know that me and neatness do not exactly go hand in hand. I’m a disaster, and so was my library. Once I got to the point that I couldn’t get through the room without moving things, I knew it was time to take action and organize my room. In the course of attempting to organize the piles of….stuff...I ran across something that took me back to some special events that took place during my school years.

Express Notches Another Win Saturday Evening

The Lockport Express improved to 2-0 on the new season with a 4-2 victory over the Roc City Royals Saturday evening. The same two teams will face off Sunday afternoon at 1:30 in Rochester at the Lakeshore Arena.

These Old Walkin' Shoes: Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?

This week’s “Walkin’ Shoes” is about things that seem to be changing around Lockport all of a sudden. Northwest Bank just took over some of the Lockport Savings Bank sites in the area. Yes, I know it was First Niagara, but I still call it Lockport Savings Bank, just like it’s always going to be Harrisons rather than Delphi. That doesn’t mean that I’m completely stuck in the past. There are just some things that should not be changed as easy as flipping a switch.

Catching Up With the Lockport Express: Week 2

After a single game weekend to start the new season, the Lockport Express hope to continue on the big opening night win during a home and home series against the Roc City Royals. The Express defeated Southern Tier Xpress 6-2 last Friday evening.

Literally the Best Reviews: The Sun, the Moon & the Rolling Stones

The Sun, the Moon, & the Rolling Stones -- Rick Cohen
Spiegel & Grau
400 Pages

The Rolling Stones have been touring for over fifty years, delivering some quintessential rock songs along the way. As a result of their success and longevity, they have been the subjects of countless books and articles. The Stones hold a special place in my heart. Their concert at Rich Stadium in 1997 was a part of our honeymoon celebration, held only four days after our wedding. They played “Memory Motel,” which has always been one of my favorites.

Express Rolls to Big Win Opening Night

The Lockport Express began a new season in a new league with a resounding 6-2 victory over visiting Southern Tier Xpress. In a Cornerstone Ice Arena crowd that was nearly equally divided between the two teams, it was Lockport which ended with the biggest cheers of the night.

Looking at Movies - Pete's Dragon (2016)

I'm going to go ahead and admit that I did not see the original Pete's Dragon, but luckily that does not affect my ability to enjoy this one. For those of us who grew up in the 1970s and 1980s, Disney was the source of movies where you could just turn off your brain and watch the story. Suspension of disbelief was easy because it was Disney and you didn't care. None of the movies were going to win awards, but they were fun to watch. The new Pete's Dragon brought me back to my childhood to those Sunday evenings where I had just taken a shower and was curled up on the couch waiting for this week's Wonderful World of Disney movie. It isn't a great movie, but it doesn't have to be.

Reminiscing: Back to School

Here it is. It’s the last weekend of the summer. By Wednesday, everyone will be back to school full-time until the end of June. Some people are ecstatic that the kids are finally back to school. Meanwhile there is probably a very large contingent of people, mostly between the ages of 6 and 18, who just collectively groaned.

On the Homefront: Thanks for the "Wild" Times

If there is one thing most parents can agree on it is that watching certain movies with our children can be one of life's simple joys. Movies capture our imagination and entertain us. They can teach or they can simply make us think. They can make us laugh and they can make us cry.

These Old Walkin' Shoes: Lazy Lightning

This week’s “Walkin’ Shoes” has less to do with walking and much more to do with driving. Yes, I know it seems like this goes against everything that the name “Walkin’s Shoes” implies, but I think it’s a pretty good exception for this week. Since I run the website, I guess I can write it any way I want. So, if you’re still interested in the nonsense that my mind has culled forth today, please keep on reading. If you’re not, read along anyway. You might be surprised.

Family Is A Big Word

When you think of your family, you think of those relatives immediately close to you - and that is normal. After a while, your thoughts may drift to extended family members you feel close to and those cousins that you grew up with. All of that goes into making up what we commonly refer to as family. But does it end there?

REMINISCING: Lockport Alumni

I went to the Lockport Distinguished Alumni Induction Ceremony on Thursday evening at the Lockport High School. The Alumni Foundation was established for community-minded citizens who wish to make Lockport High School a better place to work and learn. The gifts and bequests can be put to good use in the Lockport High School Learning Community, working towards scholarships as well as funding special projects at the school.

Lockport Express Scrimmage Southern Tier

When I woke up this morning and it was only 72 degrees, I knew that the slight nip in the air could only mean one thing. It’s almost hockey season. This morning at the Cornerstone CFCU Ice Arena in downtown Lockport, the Lockport Express played a scrimmage against NA3HL rival, Southern Tier Express.

These Old Walkin' Shoes: Good Morning Little Schoolgirl

Taking my normal walks, I stroll past a couple of former schools. It made me wonder how many of us know who the schools were named after. There are eight schools still in use that are named after influential people from the community, and there are several closed schools that have names inscribed above their doors. I would guess that most people don’t know the history behind those names. I wish they taught them in the schools. Maybe they did, but I don’t remember it ever happening.
